In its fifth year of existence, art forum berlin established itself as a starting point for young galleries and a place of opportunity for commercial spaces from Central and Eastern Europe. While in previous years, galleries from West Germany played a key role in the art fair’s concept, it is now fledgling Berlin-based spaces that have taken the initiative. In addition, both the fair and the city of Berlin seem to be financially accessible to participants from Central and Eastern Europe.
The presence of seven galleries from Russia indicates that the art market in this eastern country is on the rise. Taking part in art forum berlin this year are Aidan, Guelman, Regina, XL, Xenia, Elena Vrublevskaya (all from Moscow), and Arka (Vladivostok in the Far East). The only other gallery from the area represented at the fair is the Jiří Švestka Gallery, from Prague.
Scandinavian galleries have also strengthened their presence in Berlin as for their first time three galleries from Finland take part in the fair, increasing the number of Nordic participants to 15. This year’s art forum berlin runs from September 27 till October 1.

The editors of Umělec have decided to come up with a list of ten artists who, in our opinion, were of crucial importance for the Czech art scene in the 1990s. After long debate and the setting of criteria, we arrived at a list of names we consider significant for the local context, for the presentation of Czech art outside the country and especially for the future of art. Our criteria did not…

„Man muss die Hand von jemandem dreimal schütteln und der Person dabei fest in die Augen sehen. So schafft man es, sich den Namen von jemandem mit Sicherheit zu merken. Ich hab’ mir auf diese Art die Namen von 5.000 Leuten im Horse Hospital gemerkt”, erzählte mir Jim Hollands. Hollands ist ein experimenteller Filmemacher, Musiker und Kurator. In seiner Kindheit litt er unter harten sozialen…
