Born in 1977 in Belgium, de Smedt studied photography at the University of Gent. He currently studies at the Prague Film Academy of Performing Arts.
Inspired by film and advertising, Kris de Smedt’s photographs act as icons for the 21st century, as pictures from another world. They cast a decadent impression of time fracturing, an atmosphere of exclusiveness, separateness. Costumed figures surrealistically meet dead and live animals, objects and food. Each photograph tells its own story, which is intentionally presented as a calculated composition. The product is both effective and mendacious. He also used similar set-up scenes in his latest book, conceived as the photo album of a decrepit aristocratic family shortly after their death. Kris’ humor is likewise dry, almost brittle.
