In its fifth year of existence, art forum berlin established itself as a starting point for young galleries and a place of opportunity for commercial spaces from Central and Eastern Europe. While in previous years, galleries from West Germany played a key role in the art fair’s concept, it is now fledgling Berlin-based spaces that have taken the initiative. In addition, both the fair and the city of Berlin seem to be financially accessible to participants from Central and Eastern Europe.
The presence of seven galleries from Russia indicates that the art market in this eastern country is on the rise. Taking part in art forum berlin this year are Aidan, Guelman, Regina, XL, Xenia, Elena Vrublevskaya (all from Moscow), and Arka (Vladivostok in the Far East). The only other gallery from the area represented at the fair is the Jiří Švestka Gallery, from Prague. Scandinavian galleries have also strengthened their presence in Berlin as for their first time three galleries from Finland take part in the fair, increasing the number of Nordic participants to 15. This year’s art forum berlin runs from September 27 till October 1.
