Children inherently and fragmentarily preserve one of the archetypal reasons why it is possible to make sculptures: “I want something I like, something I would like to have.” It’s very straightforward: affection—desire—interpretation. This summer has offered an interesting comparison with two stories reminding us of winter. London is watching huge snowballs with little things mixed in by Andy Goldsworthy slowly melt away in the sun (his website meticulously presents the project, including an offer (and prices) for photographs from his previous projects).
