THE AMERICANIZATION OF THE SPRIT
Octavian Esanu looks at the acceptance and rejection of what is “American” in a non-American environment, against the backdrop of an unclear understanding of freedom and the historically growing confidence of American art, which quite possibly stands behind the seemingly universal concept of “contemporary art.” Where the colonization of the spirit through an emphasis on contemporaneity still encounters resistance, the attractiveness of American shoes perhaps presages the strongest export – packaging, boxes, frames and vehicles.

A MURDER IN FLATLAND: THE IRRUPTION OF THE REAL IN AMERICAN ABSTRACT ART
A nearly detective, but all archeological and art historical story about how one day the body of an attractive women was found by a river. Her name was Mary and she knew Kennedy. And Clement Greenberg. Somewhere among the complicated twists and turns of the ideological tensions of the Cold War, there may lie an answer – if not to the question of “Who is a murderer?” then at least as to how and why some realities meet and others pass each other by because – and thanks to – their origin in planes, spaces and points.
Contemporary Art Is Not Palo Fabuš | contemporartism | 01.02.2011
CONTEMPORARY ART IS NOT
There are no simple questions. Not only do all questions already contain the seed of their answer, but neither are there any questions that do not have other questions hidden inside them. Recently, a group of theorists, artists, curators, and art historians asked a seemingly simple question: What is contemporary art? Their essays (in the etymological meaning of the word—“attempts”—as well) on…

WHAT IS NOT CONTEMPORARY ART? THE VIEW FROM JENA
Ask not what contemporary art is, but what contemporary art should be. Oksana Pasaiko, 2009 I. “What is contemporary art?” is (clearly) not the same question as “What is art?” The former asks us to define what is particularly “contemporary” about art—not, significantly enough, what is particularly artistic about it. The question of what is “contemporary” about contemporary art seems…

MYSTICAL-IMPERIAL INTRIGUE: POOR GERMANY
Why do the Czechs exhibit German artists in such a historicist, mystic manner? It is an unconscious submissive aberration, a repeated yearning for the tyranny of cultural and transcendental values. The most recent victim of this aesthetic of the dark sweetshop unconscious of six-story cakes and visions of achieving commercial success by mixing all possible styles into a greasy artistic Eintopf is…
