WHAT IS THE CAUSE OF ANATOLY OSMOLOVSKY’S INNER IMPERATIVE? THE UNREST OF RELATIVES AND FRIENDS: GRUNDRISSE PRESENTS
|
Oh ye, the ones who were expected
The ones who never came, oh ye!
Alexander Gutov
This text has a long story. About a year ago, at the Venice Biennale, I met my friend Dmitry Gutov and his pals David Riff and Lesha Penzin. We dined at a good seafood restaurant and Gutov was especially enjoying the vintage wine, as he emphasized the difference (from bad wine) both in price and quality. Due to our… |

JUST BECAUSE...
|
Once on my birthday a sweet girl named Anyuta brought me a gift—a book entitled “We are Tiny Letters” (2001) with Herman Lukomnikov’s poems and Asya Flitman’s illustrations. The book was really small, but so compact with pictures and words that there was simply no room left over for any emptiness or double meaning. It looked so strange for the local Minsk habitat that I couldn’t help but wonder… |

PEACE ENFORCEMENT OR WHY I DON"T WANT TO BE GRASS
|
When my plane landed in Prague on August 8, 2008, friends from all over started calling and asking where I was. I had returned from Georgia on the very same day the war began there. That five-day war has been added to the list of “the shortest military conflicts in history” or “the Blitzkriegs of the 21st century”—the definition depending on whether or not a difference can be found between a war… |

THE ART OF WAR: KALEIDOSCOPE
|
Art can be introduced through different genres and mediums. In exploration of what is understood under such specific terminology as “the art of war,” here are some modest varieties.
FILM: THE GOOD AND THE BAD
In Moscow you can purchase DVDs about the Chechnya conflict along almost every street. They are an art form in their own right, utilizing the universal instruments of creation—elegantly… |

KONSTANTIN GORETSKY
|
Belarusian artist Konstantin Goretsky spent three months in Prague as a residence program participant. Delighted with everything around him, he not only devoted himself to his own work, but tried also to learn as much as possible about contemporary Czech art. He conscientiously visited all the exhibitions recommended by program curator Alena Boika, and viewed all the biggest museums and galleries… |

NEW MOSCOW ARCHITECTURE OR DREAMS AND REALITIES OF NEW MANILOVS
|
He thought of the amenities of a life of friendship, and of how nice it would be to live with a friend on, say, a riverbank somewhere. Then a bridge started to be built across the river in his mind, and then an enormous mansion with a balcony so high that it could even afford a view of Moscow. And on that balcony he would drink afternoon tea with company in the open air, and have discussions on… |

A FAIRY TALE ABOUT SMALL GIRLS, A BLUE JACKET AND SOME RANDOM ANIMALS

“There’s nothing like eating hay when you’re faint,”
the King remarked to her, as he munched away.
“I should think throwing cold water over you would be better,”
Alice suggested: “or some sal-volatile.”
“I didn’t say there was nothing better,” the King replied. “I said there was nothing like it.”

I’d never met either of them. Then, one day, I came… |

BLOODY ART IN VENITIAN CREAM; FROM THE DIARY OF NATURALIST
|
This year, I was invited to Venice again to take part in the “Continental Breakfast,” an international forum for contemporary art curators. As the forum coincided with the opening of the Venice Biennale, I made a few changes to my speech and added the following introduction.
If I Had a Daughter
If I had an adult daughter who was about to choose a profession, I would tell her: become… |

WE ARE YOUR FUTURE
|
This decisive statement was issued just prior to the opening of the Second Moscow Biennale (March 1 – April 1, 2007) by a group of Latin American and Chinese artists presented by curators Ethan Cohen and Juan Puntes. The other Biennale projects had been known long before; but this one, with its name and participants, seemed something of a sensation for anyone following news of Moscow’s “big… |

ABOUT WHITE AND BLACK: ABOUT WHITE
|
The man I love once said, "I‘m walking now through a foggy park, it‘s dark and warm." I answered, "A year ago, there was a woman with a black dog there. Is she still there?" He answered, "No, but, there are a lot of camels now." I said, "They must be white." He answered, "Yes, in the darkness they seem white," and asked me, "Do you know how to count these midnight camels?" I answered, "As a rule,… |
