AGAINST HUMAN NATURE
Post-Fordist working conditions wear a mask of openness, flexibility, and individual freedom. Criticism thus finds all the more difficult to achieve its objectives when it is literally attracted by institutions. Under such conditions, is it even possible to make art that is not part of the culture industry? Just like Kenneth Goldsmith in the opening text to this issue, these two British critics ponder the opposing tactics that, instead of attacking the concept of institutions, overpower it. Perhaps even art itself is built of nothing more than inertia.

WHAT IS A FEMINIST NOW? CONSUMERISM CAPITALISM CLASS AND THE BODY
When, in my 2003 performance piece Shop Window, I invited the public to spend time with, and to photograph, naked women of widely varying ages in Gallery Václav Špála Prague, I was acting from a powerful gut-level instinct. This instinct came in direct response to the gender polarisation I saw on the streets around me, in the imagery of women which were littered across the billboards and…

GOSHKA MACUGA: THE NATURE OF THE BEAST. WHITECHAPEL GALLERY, LONDON.
In her installation The Nature of the Beast London based Polish artist and 2008 Turner Prize nominee Goshka Mucuga has created a unique venue for public gatherings. Boldly setting her own sculpture alongside one of Picasso’s greatest masterpieces, and an assortment of past and current documentation, this forceful new work speaks of complex, historically informed, human drives. The work explores…
